Solid Week of Success for Silver Knights

By Staff | Oct 23, 2019

Tyler Consolidated's Regan Smith prepares to deliver an ace against W.Va. Class A champion Magnolia.

With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, area volleyball teams are starting to look toward the post-season tournament. And for the Tyler Consolidated High School Volleyball team, they may be starting to play their best volleyball of the season. This past week included matches against two sectional opponents and a trip to play in a tournament at Hedgesville.

The week began with a trip to Ritchie County, which was a nip and tuck affair between the Rebels and the Knights. Ritchie started off strong, taking set one in convincing style by a score of 25-12. The Knights bounced back in the second set, but it wasn’t enough as the Rebels won 25-22. Things looked better for the Silver Knights in the third set, as they won by a score of 25-20. Carrying that momentum into the fourth set, the Knights started strong, but that wasn’t quite enough as the Rebels took the fourth and final set by a score of 25-23. Following the match Coach Summers was pleased with his team, saying, “We were still not a healthy team but I thought we played very well.”

On Thursday, it was a rematch of the state championship game last year as Magnolia paid a visit to the home of the Silver Knights. In the early going, it looked like it would be all Tyler Consolidated, but the Eagles, behind the play of their All-State middle Kyndra Pilant, battled back and kept things close. Near the end of the set, on two occasions the Knights celebrated a win, but had two calls go against them, which ultimately led to the Eagles winning set one 27-25. The Knights bounced back and won sets two and three with identical scores of 25-23. However, the Eagles would not go down easily and came back to win set four 25-19, which set up a fifth set. The Knights found themselves in a 3-0 hole but made several good defensive plays to even the score and went on to win set five and the match 15-9. “This was an entertaining volleyball match for the nice crowd. We still have work to do but I thought we played well and we made fewer mistakes,” said Summers.

On Friday, the Knights headed to the Eastern Panhandle to play against Hedgesville, Philip Barbour, Washington High, East Hardy and Bridgeport in the Hedgesville Pumpkin Smash Tournament. The Knights finished in pool play as the number five seed out of ten teams, and advanced to take on Bridgeport High School (WV) in the quarterfinals. The Knights battled hard against the Indians and took set one 25-18, but lost the next two sets with scores of 25-18, 25-21.

“This was a very good tournament featuring many teams who are expected to compete for post-season titles in AA and AAA; several even had Division 1 signees on their team,” noted Summers. “The girls played hard and were disappointed that after eleven hours of volleyball they were finished.”

The Knights honored their three seniors on Senior Night, Tuesday, October 22, then will host an LKC East Division Team on Thursday, October 24, in an LKC Placement JV/Varsity match beginning at 6:00.
