Tyler Consolidated Falls to Wirt County

By Staff | Oct 9, 2019

Tyler Consolidated coach Richard Summers talks with his players during a game against Ravenswood.

It was an exciting night for the Knights Volleyball Team on Friday as the Knights played the first Friday night volleyball contest in the school’s history. The game was originally was scheduled for Tuesday; however, the Wirt County Tigers did not arrive for the match and the game was rescheduled for Friday. On this night, the Tigers brought their24-1 record to the Knights’ gym in what was considered as a battle of heavyweight volleyball teams. The first set was a nip and tuck affair with the Knights jumping out to a quick 5-1 lead. The Tigers battled back and several lead changes took place before the Knights took a 19-16 lead. Wirt County came roaring back and knotted the score at 22 all, before going on to win set one 26-24. Wirt rode that momentum into set two; several service errors and miscommunications on defense by the Knights was all that Wirt would need to win set two by a score of 25-14.

The Knights, however, were not done for the evening and fought back in set three behind the overall fine play of Knights setters Caleigh Phillips and Regan Smith. But it would not be enough and the Tigers went on to win set three 25-19. Following the match Coach Summers was upbeat about his team’s effort. “Hats off to Wirt. They had a down season last year but have put in the work to be a title contender,” Summers noted. “We have beaten some really good teams this year and have played many of the best teams close. We just need to find a way to move up one more notch.”

Not to be lost at the midpoint of the season has been the fine play of the Knights JV squad this year, who sports an 8-2 record so far on the season. They defeated Wirt County by scores of 25-15, 24-26, 25-20, behind the stellar serving of Audrey Dennis, Ashlee Spencer, and Ryley VanDyne. “Over half the team is made up of freshmen,” said Coach Summers, who feels the team has made consistent progress since day one.

On Thursday, the Knights JV and Varsity teams both picked up wins in Ravenswood, as both teams won in straight sets. The varsity won 25-23, 25-14, 25-21 and the JV won 25-17, 25-10. “A road win in the LKC is difficult and we played just well enough to win,” said Summers.

The Knights entertain Parkersburg High, Philip Barbour and Williamstown in a home quad match on Tuesday. On Thursday, October 10, they travel to Paden City for a tri match that also includes Weir High.
