Silver Knights Hard at Work

August 14, 2019
By Ed Parsons - Editor , Tyler Star News

With the opening games of the 2019 high school just a couple weeks away area schools are hard at work preparing for what promises to be another exciting season. Tyler Consolidated looks like they may have one of their better teams in several years with a roster of 32, including 10 very promising freshmen and nine sophmores.

Coach Walton and staff hit the field on the first day and haven't let up yet as they are conditioning the kids for one of the toughest schedules in Class A. The Knights will start the season with a battle on Ritchie Counties home field and return home the following week with a highly anticipated matchup with Doddridge County who is expecting big things of their own.

Doddridge County has what some consider to be the best back in the state in Hunter America a flashy speedster who racked up big yardage and six T.D.'S against the Knights last season. However, the Silver Knights counter with their own ace-in-the hole, senior Mark Rucker. Rucker put up staggering number last season including 15 T.D.'s and 1500 plus rushing yards, while also scoring through the air and on special teams. He is a multi-demensional player who will hurt the opposition in many ways including defense where he is a premier defensive back.

Tyler Consolidated football layers get back to the line and ready themselves for another sprint during summer two-a-days at the Middlebourne facility.

Rucker attended several skill camps this past summer and from the looks of things they paid off. His speed has increased and he's much stronger, more intelligent and determined to make this a season to remember. College coaches from around the area and beyond will be in the stands watching as the Knights showcase his talents.

Coach Walton is not relying solely on Rucker however, as Senior Gage Huffman will be a handful for opposing teams as well. Huffman who is a great baseball player has left his wing position from last season and is now the signal caller for the Knights. A strong rugged player with plenty of athletic ability and a great mentality, Huffman will be a tough stop running the option and tossing the pig-skin. His arm strength will allow the Knights to throw with accuracy and distance when needed, while turning to a healthy running game when the pass is taken away.

Chase Landis a highly touted sophmore will be in the backfield with Rucker along with several other newcomers. The Knights have a great group of guys who are dedicated to the program and it looks as through the Silver K nights are ion the rise. Coach Walton has put special emphasis on defense and the Knights are responding.

"We have a great group of kids out this year. A lot of under classmen, but also several players returning with experience who be believe will give us the leadership we need to have a good year. We're still working hard and everyone has the chance to showe what they can do. For the first time in a while we have good depth and hopefully it will allow us to get relief for some of the guys who go both ways on the ball. The coaching staff is excited, working hard and waiting to see if the kids are up to the challenge,"said coach Walton.
