Paden City Gets Water Update

Joe Parrish - Assistant Director of water, streets and maintenance - brought an update on the levels of Tetrachloroethylene in the Paden City water system.

It was in a town council meeting on March 4 that Tetrachloroethylene, also called Perchloroethylene (PCE), was reported to have infected the town's water system. When residents were first made known of this issue via a letter released by city officials, it was said that the average concentration of PCE in the drinking water supply for 2018 was 5.5 parts per billion (ppb), which is in excess of the USEPA's Maximum Contaminant Limit (MCL) of 5.0 ppb. Paden City Mayor Clyde Hochstrasser said that the issue was being treated seriously, and that measures were being taken to eradicate it from the water supply.

Hochstrasser also reported that water testing was being done monthly. Parrish said that in a test done on April 9, PCE readings from the water plant showed that there was 4.9 ppb of PCE in the water supply following treatment through the plant. A test also conducted in a residential home recorded that 4.8 ppb of the PCE contaminant still remained.

Both of these readings are notably under the USEPA's MCL of 5.0 ppb, and shows that the treatment being conducted by Paden City is having some affect on the PCE in the water system.

Parrish also reported that the most recent water samples had been sent out for testing, and that results should be arriving soon. He expressed that his primary goal is to make citizens aware that the city is working on getting this issue fixed, and eradicating the contaminant from the town's water supply. Parrish also conveyed that as a result of the treatment, the numbers of PCE are declining.

Parrish aims to continue to keep the residents of Paden City abreast in regards to this issue.
