Silver Knights, ’Cats Compete at Ritchie Wrestling Tourney

December 12, 2018
Tyler Star News

Tyler Consolidated and Paden City each took their wrestling shows on the road to Ritchie County on Friday and Saturday, and both ended with some success. The Silver Knights, in a head-to-head battle with the Wildcats, got the win 36-30.

"We wrestle with a lot of intensity ,and we picked up some individual wins. The boys are still learning, but they are working hard. We edged out Paden City, but it was a difficult match. They have some nice wrestlers but are like us in that we can't fill all the spots, so we're at a disadvantage," said Knights Coach Chad Deaton.

Paden City dropped a match to Doddridge County on Friday night, 53-24, and also fell to Parkersburg South, 54-30. In their last match Friday, the Wildcats fell to Ritchie County as the Rebels racked up 48 points, to the 'Cats' 24.

Stephen Judge has his hand raised in triumph following a victory by pin during the Ritchie County tournament in Ellenboro.

On Saturday, St. Marys got the best of the Wildcats, as did Tyler, before Paden City won over Clarksburg Notre Dame, 30-18. The Silver Knights fell to Parkersburg South Blue by 57-12.

The Knights' Stephen Judge picked up two wins during the tournament while Austin Timmons got two wins and two defeats. Billy Anderson had a good two days in the heavyweight division as the 268 pounder won four and lost two.

Paden City got big wins from junior James Beaver, who went 6-1 over two days. Seniors Ryan Cross and Mike Shreves also added wins to the 'Cats' total.

"This was a difficult tournament to take part in due to our numbers and open weight classes. We can score points and be competitive when we wrestle, but we have to forfeit too many matches due to them not being filled! It's frustrating as a coach to watch our boys wrestle and compete but never be able to win as a team due to our numbers," Paden City Coach Mike Owens said.

Both teams will be in action on Saturday, in the annual Larry Ritchie Tournament at Tyler Consolidated High School.
