TC Netters Honored

November 7, 2018
Tyler Star News

The Tyler Star News Athletes of the Week are two senior Silver Knights volleyball players. Emily Lancaster, a senior middle/outside hitter, and Alexa Johnson, a senior hitter/front line player, both came up big for the Knights in sectional and regional volleyball action this past week.

Lancaster, a 5'7" leaper, has become a big part of the Silver Knights team this season with her ability to block, and her skill at hitting. She can also change directions very well using either hand, and is good at finding the open spot with her kills.

Playing on a team loaded with talent, Lancaster cannot be overlooked. During the past week she had big matches in wins over Ritchie County, Paden City, and Magnolia. She was also a factor in the close losses to Magnolia in the Sectional finals and the Regional finals.

Her stats for the week included 60 kills and 19 blocks. Lancaster has good timing, and her quickness makes her hard to defend; she has given the Knights another quality player as they prepare to enter the state tournament on Friday morning in Charleston.

Johnson, a 6' senior, has been playing volleyball since middle school. She has become a danger to every team the Silver Knights face. Her skill as an outside hitter is as good as any around, and she continues to improve with her blocking on defense. She is very good at finding the openings and is accurate with her hitting. Her size and aggressiveness make her kills very hard to defend and opens up opportunities for other hitters when the opposition tries to defend her.

One on one she can usually win the battle. She is an unselfish player who gets excited when the Knights make a big play. During this last week she showed up big as the Knights played for the Sectional and Regional titles. Her stats show her with 65 kills, 21 blocks, and 11 digs. She will need to continue that type of play as the Knights move into the state tournament on Friday.

Special Honorable Mention goes to the Silver Knights' Josey Jones who reached a milestone on Saturday against Wheeling Central, as she recorded her 1000th career kill. She was presented with an award between sets. Joining Jones on the special list is Knights setter JoLee Walton. Paden City sophomore hitter Hope Weber had good Sectional tournament play and is deserving of special recognition as well.

Honorable Mention goes to Silver Knight football players Griffin Phillips, Mark Rucker, and Gage Huffman, as well as Paden City volleyball players Mallory Yeater and Mady Kline.
