Silver Knights Finish Strong at State Meet

By Staff | Oct 31, 2018

Making their first ever appearance in the West Virginia State Cross Country Meet, the Tyler Consolidated Silver Knights gave an impressive preview of things to come. With the entire team returning next season – one freshman, three sophomores and a junior – the Knights are hoping this season is the start of many future trips south for Tyler Consolidated.

Headed up by sophomore Spencer Corley, who has been the inspiration for the rest of the team all season, the Knights picked up 11th place among the 21 AA-A teams in competition, and fourth among all Class A teams. Corley came in 15th overall among the 161 AA-A runners and fifth in Class A. Corley, who last season got the 30th position in the state meet – and was the Knights’ only qualifier, moved up 15 spots since then. If this pattern holds true, he could be in the top spot, or near it, with another year’s work. Don’t count him out, you’ll probably see him out running sometime this week.

James Streets, another sophomore, is getting closer all the time to becoming a top competitor. With a time of 18:17.48 and the 37th finisher overall, Streets is riding Corley’s tail, and that will be a good thing as they compete against each other.

Streets has improved dramatically since the beginning of the season, and with some hard work, could be pushing the leaders come next year.

Freshman Haygen Baker, came in at 87th overall and a fine finish of 19:09.64. Baker is impressive as well, coming right out of middle school to being in the middle of the pack at the state meet. Running against the best in West Virginia by qualifying as a team member should be enough to motivate you to work all year round to improve your time when next season rolls around.

Another Silver Knight who has worked hard all season and continues to improve is junior Creed Ammons. He finished with a time of 20:06.76 to add some points to the Knights total. Ammons has the potential to move much higher up the ranks in the next year; he has all the tools, and with a little extra effort, he could be the one the Silver Knights need to get to the top.

Hadyn Brown, another sophomore, put on a good performance to give the Knights some points as he ran a 20:48.51. Brown is a competitor who has made steady improvement throughout the season. His hard work, effort, and determination have been a big part of the Knights’ success as a team. Once it gets in your blood, you know it’s what you want to do. He seems like the kind that will spend the time to be a winner again next year.

If the Silver Knights can get a few more runners interested, and a couple more move up from middle school, watch out, they just might bring home the gold.

“We went to Cabell Midland High School hoping to put on a good performance, and we did that,” said Coach Brenna Myers. “These kids give their best each and every day. Whether it’s practice or at meets, they never give up. Their work ethic and attitude is just tremendous. It’s a pleasure coaching these kids, and I believe we have a lot to look forward to in the very near future.”
