Silver Knights Take Williamstown In Home Opener

When Williamstown comes to town you can always expect a tough battle. Coach Summers expected that on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at Knights gym; however, his team watched as the junior varsity won two of three from the Yellowjackets to set the tone for the varsity's three straight set win.

In the first set, the Knights jumped out to an early lead and hung on to get a 25-16 victory behind some hard hitting and good solid defense. JoLee Walton, Josey Jones and Alexa Johnson led the way with some big kills and serves.

Set two also belonged to the Knights as they again made easy work of the Yellow Jackets, 25-15, with Cora Grimm and Emily Lancaster doing most of the damage. Madison DeVaughn also played a nice set with four points.

The third and final set was not quite as easy, but the Knights took control in the end after the Yellowjackets tied the match at 20. The Knights went on to win 25-22. Lancaster and Johnson had some huge plays at the net, and Grimm made several good digs to help the Knights. Walton came through in set three with 14 assists.

For the match Walton had 38 assists, 72 sets, 12 service points, two blocks, four digs and three kills. Jones led the team in scoring with 14 service points, 12 big kills, five blocks and nine digs. Johnson was the kill leader with 15, some of which were with force and unreturnable. She also recorded three blocks and two digs. Grimm used her reliable serving to get the Knights 11 points and added eight digs from the back row. Lancaster, who's becoming a quality frontliner, had six kills and five blocks - along with three digs. Peyton Kocher ended with a match-high 14 digs, while adding three assists and three points. The Knights' depth played a huge part in the match as they also got big play out of three underclassmen. Regan Smith hammered six kills, added five blocks and had three digs, while DeVaughn got seven points and four digs. Victoria Hood played well at the net and got five timely kills.

The Knights return home on Thursday to take on Warren Local. "Warren is a big and powerful team who are very good. It should make for an exciting match," said Coach Summers.
