Spotlight: Peyton Kocher

July 25, 2018
Tyler Star News

Peyton Kocher, a senior at Tyler Consolidated, excels in two sports and, academically, is near the top of her class. When she takes the court for the Silver Knights, she is all business. Nothing seems to take from her concentration, and she does something most players I've watched don't often do: She has fun!

As much as she loves volleyball and being a part of Coach Richard Summers' ultra-successful program, she never lets it show that basketball may be her favorite sport. Don't get me wrong - she is a vital part of Knights volleyball, a three-year letter winner who will certainly gain her fourth this coming season. Her hard and accurate serving, plus her ability to get to the ball, do not go unnoticed. She can dig with the best of them and can also set when needed.

"I like having players like Peyton on my team. She's a team player who also enjoys doing well on her own; however, she will sacrifice for the good of the team and her school. Her attitude is as good as I've ever had. I'm proud of the way she has matured as an athlete. She not only gives 100 percent, she also follows the rules of our team and is a leader for the younger kids," said Coach Summers.

Kocher has set some big goals of her own: "I am excited about my senior year. I think we will have one of the best volleyball teams; we have all of our starters back, and we've been working hard in the off-season. I have set some goals for my senior year, and one is to get a state championship.

We know the competition is tough, but we feel with our dedication, hard work and experience, we can get it done," said Peyton Kocher.

"I also want to thank my coaches for being there with encouragement and instructions when we need them.

"It's been a pleasure to have them as part of my family. Of course we also want to win the LKC."

As a basketball player for the Silver Knights, Kocher gives her team an extra dimension because she can knock down the three from long range; she's not a streak shooter, so you can count on her most of the time. Occasionally she will go cold, but when she's hot, she's hot. Watch out! In a summer league game this year she knocked in 11, three-pointers while playing only about three quarters. She is also a threat to go to the basket and a deadly free throw shooter. Keep your eye on her.

"We are expecting big things from her this year; that's not to put pressure on her, but to let her know we expect her to be a leader. I am looking forward to coaching her as head coach for the first time. I saw some good things during summer ball, and I expect it to get even better, " Coach Ben Thomas said.

Kocher has some impressive stats already, one being she was was the leading three point shooter in the Ohio Valley her junior year, was named Athlete of the Week, and is a three-year letter winner.

She also shot 72 percent from the free throw line and nearly 40 percent from beyond the arch.

She has been honorable mention LKC her freshman year, third team her sophomore year and second team her junior year. Looks like a pattern. Watch out first team this year. Peyton has represented TCHS at the LKC night of champions all three years in the three-point shoot-out competition.

As hard as she works in her sports interest, Kocher is involved in many other school activities and hobbies. For hobbies, she loves spending time with friends and family, traveling, sports - to name a few. She is a member of the book club, prom club treasurer, National Honor Society, FBLA, and has kept an above 4.0 average GPA throughout her high school career. She currently carries a 4.3 GPA.

Kocher plans to attend WVU following graduation, with a goal of becoming a Nurse Anesthetist. Good luck Peyton Kocher during your final high school season and your future endeavors.

Don't forget folks - the Silver Knights girls are loaded with talent. Come out and watch them as they play volleyball and basketball. I think you'll enjoy what you see.
