Taking part in the five-team summer basketball league this year has been River and Frontier from the Ohio side and Paden City, Valley and Hundred from West Virginia. The season ended with River coming out on top with an 8-0 record. Paden City finished up at 6-2, Valley at 3-4, and Hundred at 0-8. Frontier ended with a 3-3 record.

All the games were played on Tuesday nights with each team getting in two games per night while alternating gyms. On June 18, the teams played at Valley High School where Valley and Hundred hooked up in game one. Valley was shooting lights out and took a first-half lead to go on and get the win by 15. Leading the way for the Lumberjacks was Levi Anderson who shot 10-13 from beyond the arch and finished with 39 points. He received scoring help from Jacob Hall, Abe Satterfield Gavin Streets and Jerry Evert. Hundred was led by big man Travis McCoy with 17, while Cody Soles and Elijah Geho pitched in 10.

Game two on the night matched up River and Hundred with the Hornets holding their own for the first 15 minutes of the half before River's depth took over and led them to the win. River had a balanced scoring attack with Thomas Schidt, John Murphy, Jason Deaton and Michael Johnson doing most of the damage. Once again, McCoy led the Hornets with nine rebounds and 15 points. River upped it record to 6-0 with the win, while Hundred - though playing well - has yet to get a victory.

In game two of the night for River, they jumped out to a big lead on Paden City and led 16-2 before the Wildcats hit a three and a layup to pull to within eight, but it was all River as they gained their second win of the night to stay undefeated. Paden City was led by Trey Slider with 12 and Matt Saxon with nine. Ty Cain added six points and seven rebounds.

The last game of the evening pitted Paden City against Valley in what turned out to be the best game of the night with the Wildcats getting the win by nine. With the score knotted at 30 after one half, Valley came out on fire and went up by seven, 49-42, before the Wildcats came back behind the hot hand of Slider to take a lead, 54-51, to hold on for the victory. Slider had 9 three-pointers in the win and ended with 34 points, while Saxon added 17 points. Also, Walter Joy chipped in 11, including two three-point shots, and Ty Cain hit for eight markers and hauled in nine rebounds. Valley had a balanced attack with Anderson again leading the way with 14. Streets added six and Evatt hit for 11.

No stats are yet available from last night's season ending games, but it was a good summer league for these high school teams, and all the boys got some quality time on the court. Coaches got a chance to spend some time with their teams in hopes of being successful when the fall season rolls around. "It was a good league and a chance for us to see what we have and figure out how to use them. Summer league is a good time for the kids to get some action against area teams and see how they stack up.

"We're excited for Valley High School; we have some new kids, but we also have some veterans, so hopefully we can be competitive and win some games," said Valley Coach John Kocher.
