’Cats, Knights Engage in 7-on-7 Drills

June 20, 2018
BY ED PARSONS - Staff Writer (eparsons@tylerstarnews.com) , Tyler Star News

Paden City and Tyler Consolidated hooked up on Thursday, for some preseason 7 on 7 football at the Wildcats' field. Both teams got an early look at what may be in store for this coming fall. Every year, during the heat of the summer, the local schools start their training for the upcoming school year; part of that is weight lifting, conditioning on the field, and learning positions and who your personal may be.

Tyler has several skilled players and looks to be deep at wide receiver and set at quarterback. Tyler had close to 20 players and are hoping by the time the season rolls around, to add a few more. Paden City had around 15 out, but it's preseason and some athletes are on vacation and still deciding whether to play.

A couple bright spots for Paden City is Alex McCoy - a first time Paden City player who looks like he will work out well at the quarterback spot.

He seemed to have a strong arm and was fairly accurate. Also Matt Saxon is participating for the first time and could be a game breaker. He has good hands and speed. Back after an injury last year, and looking good with very good size, is Webber. Ryan Cross will be back and will be one of the leaders. He has excellent strength, speed and a great set of hands.

The Silver Knights showed they are capable of scoring with Mark Rucker doing most of the damage. Griffin Phillips can really air it out and is one of the better running quarterbacks in the state. That duo alone will keep most teams on their toes.

Besides that, there are quite a few other good ball players on each team, and they showed it on Thursday. Both teams scored well and made a lot of completions while running nice routes. Tyler was a little deeper in personell and defensively showed up and made some big plays.

Remember, it's still summer time and over the course of the next couple months, many things can change. Both schools will be exciting to watch, and this writer encourages everyone to get behind the football teams and show their support. It's going to be here before we know it. There is still a couple weeks of summer training going on, so if you get a chance go and watch. You'll see how hard these kids work and how much coaching goes into teaching the game and working with them to prevent injuries. We have excellent coaches and excellent trainers at both schools. Good luck and have a safe summer.
