Spotlight: TC’s Phillips

May 30, 2018
Tyler Star News

The sports season for the 2018 school year is now over, but that doesn't mean high school athletes are finished for the year. Some things never change, and one of them is Tyler Consolidated junior, soon-to-be senior, Griffin Phillips' love for sports. As impressive as he has been on the football field for the Silver Knights the past three seasons, the best is yet to come.

Phillips, who no doubt could play multiple positions if called upon, is at his best as the Knights quarterback. During the 2017 season he led the Silver Knights to a 5-5 record, barely missing out on making the state playoffs. He tossed the ball for over 1000 yards during the campaign while also picking up over 600 yards rushing. His play as a defensive back was just as impressive as he batted down 10 passes, intercepted five and added 21 tackles.

He also scored 10 touchdowns and passed for another 14. Phillips will no doubt spend much of his summer working on conditioning, speed, strength and passing. Not to be overlooked is his skill as a punter and kicker.

Tyler Consolidated junior Griffin Phillips is the Silver Knights’ player in focus for this week of the Tyler Star News.

Last season he added 19 extra points, while also averaging 44.5 yards on kick-offs; his punting average was 37 yards.

"I have all the confidence in the world in Griffin; he's a fine athlete, and a better young man. We will be counting on him heavily this coming season, so what he does during the off season and over the summer will play a major role in our success as a team. He will be one of our leaders, so we will expect big things from him," said Knights head coach Ryan Walton.

Griffin Phillips is one of those athletes you can look at and say, "He has natural ability." Some kids have to work extra hard and to some it just comes natural. Phillips does and has both!

His ability and skills extend beyond the football field; he is also a quality basketball player, having started on the varsity for the past three seasons. During the summer he plays in the Sistersville summer league, a highly competitive league that has many of the area's best adult players.

Last season he had several scoring nights above 40. He used the league as a way to grow on the court and carried it over to this past season where he led Coach Rick Leach's Silver Knights to the WV State Basketball tournament in Charleston, their first appearance since 2007.

"He's a hard worker who is a joy to coach. He doesn't get rattled easily and often draws the toughest defensive assignment. I put a lot of trust in him this year, and he almost always came through; he is one of the most unselfish players I've ever coached," said Coach Leach.

Griffin is also a team player who likes to get everyone involved. Last season he averaged around 16 points per game and handed out two assists. He was also the team leader in steals. He will be counted on once again to play the role of leader as the Silver Knights will look to use his talent to propel them to the state football playoffs, and get them down to Charleston for back-to-back state basketball appearances.

"I will be working hard to make my senior year one to remember. I want to leave Tyler Consolidated as a winner. With hard work and everyone playing together I believe we will do that," said Phillips.

If you want to see Phillips in action, head to the city park in Sistersville this summer and watch some great basketball. You'll see what the Silver Knights are so excited about for the 2018-19 sports season.
