BLAST FROM THE PAST FOR MARCH 7

Knights Head To Charleston For Quarterfinals

March 7, 2018
Tyler Star News

The 1994 Tyler Consolidated Silver Knights entered the Regional Finals at Moundsville Field House with a 10-10 record and the underdogs to a fine 14-9 St. Marys team. The Blue Devils took a lead at the half but the Knights behind 23 points from Bobby West sent the Devils home and the Knights to Charleston for a battle with 12-10 Bridgeport in the quarterfinals of the state tournament.

Once down at Charleston, the Silver Knights played on Wednesday against Bridgeport and held a 10 point lead in the third quarter before the Indians cut the lead to three, heading into the fourth, and from there, went on to claim a 57-50 win over the Knights. Still, it wasn't a bad finish to a season most had written off in January, to out-hustle, out-rebound and generally out-play the defending two-time defending AA champions.

It was Tyler Consolidated's first season as a school, and taking home a sectional and regional championship in their first year put two plaques in what was then a yet-to-be built trophy case, that is now full and running over. The Silver Knights was paced by Joe Zevnick with 17 points in the contest, while Senior Tommy Phillips added 11, nine rebounds, and three steals. Jeff Hunt had his best game of the season, and West came through with 14 points, nine assists and six six rebounds. Scott Strode, pictured blocking a shot on Bridgeport's Eric Stoneking, ended his high school career with six rebounds, two blocks and nine points. This past Friday, the Silver Knights knocked off St. Marys once again to stay alive, and perhaps get another trip to Charleston. Tonight's game against Cameron will tell the story. See ya, at 7 p.m. at Tyler Consolidated High School.
