Former Mayor Pete Thaw Lived Life of Public Service

Former Sistersville Mayor Pete Thaw, who passed away on December 28, 2017, began his career of public service in 1958, as an elected member of Sistersville City Council.

In 1958, Thaw also began the John F. Kennedy for President campaign with Robert P. (Bob) McDonough in Parkersburg.

Thaw would go on to serve as mayor of Sistersville for four terms. Under his leadership, Thaw worked with President Kennedy to acquire funding to build the Sistersville Public Library.

In 1968, Thaw was named the W.Va. Chairman for the Robert F. Kennedy for President Campaign. That same year, he ran the headquarters for the James Sprouse for Governor campaign and became the administrative assistant to John D. (Jay) Rockefeller IV.

In 1969, Thaw was appointed Deputy Secretary of State by Rockefeller. In 1977, he was appointed Executive Assistant in the Governor's Office of Economic and Community Development. In 1980, he was subsequently appointed state director of the CETA and JTPA federal employment and job training programs. Governor Arch A. Moore, Jr appointed him to the position of State Presiding Judge for the W.Va. State Racing Commission where he retired in 1985 after 11 years of service.

In 1998, Thaw was elected to a four year term on the Kanawha County Board of Education. He was reelected four times and served for 19 years on the board.

Thaw was born on January, 5, 1931, in Akron, son of Robert and Jeanette Thaw. Both parents predeceased him as did his only brother, Robert Harper Thaw.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia B. Thaw of Charleston; his son Robert F. Thaw, daughter-in-law Laura Bly Thaw, both of Charleston; and two grandchildren: Carly Rea Thaw a senior at American University in Washington D.C. And Rob Thaw, a senior at George Washington High School in Charleston; and his adopted shelter dog, Kady.
