TCMS Matmen Begin Season

The Tyler Consolidated Knights Middle school wrestling season has begun, and the Knights grapplers are taking podium positions in various local tournaments. The Knights are coached by second-year head coach Mitch Nichols, a former wrestler and graduate of Tyler Consolidated High School. The Knights wrestlers in order by weight are Kaden Huffman (78 lb), Danny McCune (84 lb), John Headley (90 lb), Steven Judge (95 lb), Kendal Huffman (102 lb), Trenton Huffman (110 lb), Donovan Judge (123 lb), Jude Childers (135 lb), Shane Bates (145 lb), Russel Lewis (155 lb), Case Landis (171 lb), Donald Shields (190lb), and Ryan Fletcher (HWT).

The Knights first tournament was Dec. 9 at the Cameron Dragons "Conquer the Lair" Invitational. With 22 teams from W.Va., OH, and Pa. in attendance, the Knights represented strongly, placing ninth overall. Individual placers in the tournament were third place Jude Childers and Trenton Huffman, fourth place finisher Ryan Fletcher, fifth place finisher Donnie Shields, sixth place finishers Steven Judge and John Headley, and seventh place finisher Kaden Huffman.

The Knights had a busy week the week of Dec. 11, participating in two quads, one at Pleasants and one at Doddridge, followed by the 5th Annual Junior Little Kanawha Conference Invitational on Dec. 16. The Knights went 2-1 as a team at the Pleasants Quad, defeating Hamilton and Pleasants and losing a close match to Jackson. The Knights went 3-0 as a team at the Doddridge Quad, beating Doddridge, Taylor, and North Marion. Coming off impressive team wins, the Knights had high hopes entering the LKC Tournament. Tyler Consolidated again wrestled tough finishing fourth as a team out of 11 squads. Leading the way for the Knights and winning LKC Championships were Eighth Grader Jude Childers (135lb Champ) and Seventh Grader Trenton Huffman (110 lb Champ). Both wrestlers pinned their way to the championship bout and delivered dominating wins in the championship matches.Also placing at podium were second place finisher Donnie Shields (190 lb); third place finishers Kaden Huffman (78 lb) and Ryan Fletcher (HWT); fourth place finishers Danny McCune (78 lb), Case Landis (171 lb), and Russel Lewis (155lb); fifth place finishers Steven Judge (95 lb), Shane Bates (145lb) and John Headley (90lb); and sixth place finisher Kendall Huffman (102 lb).

The Knights hope to build on this early success as the year extends towards the WSAZ state championships in January. The Knights also have a home match Jan 10 at 6 p.m. against River. Come out and support your local Knights wrestlers as they work to improve their skills on the mat!
