Katy Wells Is Christmas Parade Grand Marshal

November 29, 2017
Tyler Star News

Local EMS worker Katy Wells has been selected as the Grand Marshal for the 2017 Christmas Parade held in Middlebourne. Wells started working with the Middlebourne EMS in October of 1974 and she said it has been quite an adventure. She says that the EMS tries to make every sporting event to be there for the kids. Speaking of kids, Wells has 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 3 step-grandchildren which keeps her very busy in her free time. In her many years with the EMS, Wells stated that she has unfortunately had to pick up some her family members with the ambulance.

Wells mentioned that there have been three babies delivered in the ambulance while she was on shift. She was also on scene when the 52 men fell from the scaffolding at Willow Island in Pleasants County. She has several bittersweet experiences in her many years of service.

Wells would like to see more of the youth get involved in local emergency services. She says that with all of the classes to be taken, new policies being made, and the changing of the rules, it is making it more difficult for volunteers to get involved in local services. Also the prices of medical equipment and upkeep of supplies has caused more costs for emergency services. Everywhere she goes, Wells has a pager attached. "You eat with it, sleep with it and have it next to you even when you take a bath", Wells stated. She continued, "You have to be passionate about what you do."

Wells is a very inspirational member of the community and has a very selfless demeanor. Wells commented, "You have to have a positive attitude in everything you do, it is important."

Wells will be in the Christmas Parade in Middlebourne on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. and it will be a great opportunity for the community to get out and socialize, enjoy the sights and give Wells thanks for her contributions to the community.
