Tyler Star News

The Tyler Star News Athlete of the Week for August 23, 2017 is Cory Chipps a (6'5" 275 lb) senior lineman for the Tyler Consolidated Silver Knights. Chipps will be entering is third season as a Silver Knight football player and will be seeking his third straight letter.

Anyone who looks at him can see he has not been slack when it comes to working out as opposing teams are soon to find out. Chipps said he has made it his goal to improve his conditioning and his strength and to turn his senior season into a success.

"We don't have as many football players as we have in the past and I know I will be playing on both sides of the ball so I have been working hard to prepare myself for that. Coach Walton is counting on the seniors to be leaders this year and my personal goal is to stay injury free and help lead this team to the playoffs and beyond," said Chipps.

Not only is Cory a vital member of the football team he is also a first class wrestler for the Silver Knights and will be vying for his fourth letter. His high school wrestling coach Chad Snider is expecting a huge year for this powerful senior. "Last year he had a breakout season and nearly went undefeated. He had a great meet at the OVAC tournament which is one of the largest high school wrestling meet in the country. We for very excited for him as he placed in the meet and just one or two mistakes kept him from the championship," said Snider.

Chipps also made it to the state tournament the past two seasons only to fall short but has set a goal of coming away a champion this year. He said he is also excited about the LKC tournament which he thinks he can win this year. For now though he is concentrating on football and conditioning which he hopes will propel him into the wrestling season in great shape.

"We haven't had a lineman with his size and strength in a long time. I am looking for big things from Cory, he has all the tools to make a difference in our game. We hope he can open some holes for our backs and wrap some people up on defense. A lot of what we do will center around him,"said Head Football Coach Ryan Walton.

Chipps, is a mild mannered quite type person who lets his actions speak louder than his words. He has Division 1 size and strength and if he can put everything together he will be a handful for the opposition.

Upon graduation Chipps said he is contemplating joining the military. A good choice that should surely bring a smile on some recruiter's face. Good luck to the Tyler Consolidated Silver Knights and Cory Chipps this Friday night as they take on the Yellow Jackets of Williamstown in the season opener.
