Tyler Star News

Dave Riggle, 29, a native of Cameron, WV has officially been hired by the Wetzel County Board of Education as the new Athletic Director at Paden City High School. The opening occurred recently when Coach Fred King who spent the past 15 years in the position announced his retirement.

Riggle, a graduate of Cameron High School where he played basketball under coach Jack Hart was also a member of the Dragons baseball, cross country and track teams. Upon graduation he entered West Liberty University where he graduated in 2012 with a Bachelors degree in Physical Education and Health. He is currently pursuing a masters in Educational Leadership at his alma mater.

In 2014 Riggle took over the Paden City High School girls basketball head coaching job and led them to the WVHIT Championship. His coaching career was cut short after one season when he took a position with Pepsi. The following year he decided to resume his teaching and coaching career and he returned to Paden City as an elementary school teacher while taking over the Head Junior High Volleyball job for a year and Head Junior High Boys basketball for two years. He is currently the head Junior High Boys track coach and has been around children and sports most of his life. He also volunteered as a coach of special olympics for 14 years in Marshall County.

"I am very excited and honored to have this opportunity to give back to the great community of Paden City which has so openly welcomed my wife and I," stated Coach Dave Riggle. Riggle mentioned how he recalled as a high school athlete traveling down to Paden City to play. He said he knew then there was something special about this school and town by the way they unite together to support their team with packed facilities full of passionate fans.

He said, five years ago when the chance to coach basketball at Paden City came up, he jumped on it and is thankful he did. "In these five years I have had the honor to coach some of the greatest kids a coach could desire, these kids give 100% and then give you a little bit more when you ask for it, so I want to do the same for them as their athletic director."

Coach Riggle said he was impressed with the support of the boosters clubs, parents supporting their kidsby coaching summer and intermural teams, working concessions, doing fundraising and the many other things which go unrecognized. "These are reasons why Paden City sports programs are so successful," he added.

He said he looks forward to working with these groups and individuals. "I am very thankful for all the support Mr. Salva, Coach King, and the community have given me over the past few years, and I will work tirelessly to make sure the opportunity I have been given doesn't go to waste." Paden City has a storied history of great teams, and Riggle said he welcomes the challenge to make a little more history by supporting the coaches and athletes.

Riggle said he looks for a smooth transition and will make changes as the needs arise." I see a system that is already in place and seems to be working well, when new people take over in any occupation there will always be new ideas and changes often occur, on the other hand if it's not broken don't try and fix it. I see some things that may help us get more kids involved and hopefully this will be a positive way to improve Paden City High School sports, we have some coaching changes as well and I will work hard to make things move in the right direction," added coach Riggle.

Coach Riggle, AD, and his wife Heather who is the high school assistant softball coach reside on church street in Paden City and both are currently employed by the Wetzel County Board of Education. We welcome the coach Riggle as Paden City's new Athletic Director and wish him all the best in his newest endeavor.
