April Proclaimed Child Abuse Prevention Month

April 5, 2017
BY ED PARSONS - Staff Writer (eparsons@tylerstarnews.com) , Tyler Star News

Each year, countless children suffer from abuse and neglect. All too often they have been abused and victimized by the very adults responsible for protecting, loving and providing for them. Clearly, child abuse is a community problem. No single agency, individual, or discipline has the necessary knowledge, skills or resources to provide the assistance abused children need and deserve. That is why area agencies have decided to work together to bring a consistent message during the month of April Child Abuse Prevention Month. The area agencies taking a stand against child abuse are: Tyler County Prevention Coalition, Tyler County Family Resource Network, The Lighthouse Child Advocacy Center, Wetzel County Family Resource Network and the WCCCF. These agencies believe that a consistent message will make a bigger impact.

The Tyler County Family Resource Network and The Lighthouse Child Advocacy Center met with the Tyler County Commission on Wednesday, March 22. It was during this time that Eric Vincent, Commission President, read and signed a proclamation declaring April as Child Abuse Prevention Month. A copy of this proclamation can be viewed on The Lighthouse Child Advocacy Center's Facebook page.

Also, during this meeting, The Lighthouse Child Advocacy Center donated the Children's Memorial Flag to the Tyler County Commission to be flown at the courthouse for the month of April in honor of Child Abuse Prevention month. The Children's Memorial flag is a red flag depicting blue, paper-doll-like figures of children holding hands. In the center, a white chalk outline of a missing child symbolizes the thousands of children lost to violence each year. This flag will help raise awareness of child abuse and neglect.

Pinwheels have been placed throughout the county to show support of Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The agencies noted above would like to publicly thank the Tyler County Commission for their support of Child Abuse Prevention month activities and events.

Below is the Child Abuse Prevention Month Proclamation as approved by the Tyler County Commission and Signed by Commission President Eric Vincent.

Whereas, child abuse is a complex and ongoing problem in our society, affecting great numbers of children in Tyler County; and

Whereas, every child is entitled to be loved, cared for, nurtured, secure and free from sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional and verbal abuse and neglect; and

Whereas, child abuse prevention is a community responsibility and finding solutions depends on involvement among all people; and

Whereas, Tyler County has dedicated individuals and organization who work daily to prevent the problem of child abuse and neglect and to help parents obtain the support they need to raise children in a safe, nurturing environment; and

Whereas, effective child abuse prevention programs succeed because of partnerships among agencies, schools, religious organizations, law enforcement agencies, and the business community; and

Whereas, local communities are requested to join in demonstrating their commitment to protecting children and to send a clear message that the criminal and sexual victimization of our children will not be tolerated.

Therefore, I do proclaim April as Child Abuse Prevention Month and call upon all citizens, to increase their participation in efforts to prevent child abuse and strengthen the community in which we live by supporting the established framework for a comprehensive strategy to address all forms od child abuse and neglect. Passed by the County Commission of Tyler County, West Virginia, this 22nd day of March, 2017.
