Ann Standiford

Oct 26, 2016

Ann Ligouria Standiford (Davis) left this life on Monday, October 24, 2016.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Arthur Davis and Margaret (Mullin)Davis; two brothers, Tom and Joe Davis; and her husband of 52 years, the late William Eugene Standiford.

She is survived by three (six) cherished children: Tom (Teresa) Standiford of New Martinsville, W.Va; Bridgett (Erich) Reger of Huntington, W.Va; and Bob (Danielle) Standiford of New Martinsville, W.Va. and six (seven) beloved grandchildren: Staci (Daniel) Fonner of Coventry, England; T.J. Standiford of St. Petersburg, FL; Trevor Standiford, Ellie Reger, and Paige Reger of Huntington, W.Va; and Kiera Standiford of New Martinsville, W.Va.

“Mammam,” as she became known after grand children starting showing up, was born on March 31, 1936, in Sistersville, W.Va., and even after spending 60 years living in New Martinsville, she still proudly called herself a Sistersvillian.

She worked at the New Martinsville Public Library for 35 years, and loved all “libaries,” as she called them.

In recent years, she visited Drinko Library at Marshall University and the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, wandering from room to room pointing and “aw-ing” out loud.

She was an avid reader who especially loved Max Lucado books and a talented cross-stitcher who shared her gift by making things for her loved ones. Her other loves included all things chocolate and the many precious animals she cared for through the years (a few cats, many dogs, and even a goat. Yes, a goat). She enjoyed playing cards and games, having an adventure, or living one vicariously through a loved one. When she was in the kitchen, she flopped a tea towel over her shoulder for convenience and would nibble on various things, then put them in the fridge for months. A peek in her freezer would reveal about eight McDonald’s iced coffees in various states of “finished.”

She could often be found walking her dog Yogi or participating in events and Bible studies at the New Martinsville United Methodist Church (formerly St. John’s), where she was a member for 60 years. Or sitting on a tall kitchen stool, eating her lunch, reading a book (held open by a railroad spike), and looking out the window to see if she could catch a glimpse of any of the neighborhood humming birds.

Her quintessential outfit was high-wasted elastic pants with a blouse, cardigan, and her trusty Keds. And, if she was out, a long green dog “lish” hung over her shoulder, because if she was out, Yogi wasn’t far behind.

She was quirky and silly, wearing big hats for winter and summer, jumping up and down on Maple Avenue as she watched the Magnolia Marching Band head to the football field, and even taking a motorcycle ride from a complete strangerwhen she was in her 70s.

Her prescription for life would include a soul- mate-dog, a good book, a daily nap, and a piece of chocolate at bedtime. She never quite mastered the art of the whisper or perfected more than a handful of dinners, but her excitement and love for her family and friends never waned. Often, you would get a hand-over- the-mouth giggle or a “bully for you!” after sharing good news with her, or perhaps a tall, bony hug and a “goody goody!”

She will be missed dearly and never forgotten, as we wait patiently for the day we will join her in Heaven.

Family will receive friends honoring Ann on Thursday from 9 a.m. until time of funeral service at Noon at the Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory 751 Third St. New Martinsville with Pastor Sharletta Green officiating.

Interment will follow in Northview Cemetery, New Martinsville.
