Tyler bus route may reopen soon

BY ED PARSONS - Staff Writer (eparsons@tylerstarnews.com) , Tyler Star News

Troy Smith, transportation director for Tyler County Schools, reported to the board there is progress being made on the Jefferson Run Road and Low Gap bus route.

He said the state is working on the slip which has the route currently shut down. He visited the site and they are driving the final pilings and installing the cribbing. He said if all goes right the route should be running again soon, could be as early as a next week.

Smith said, he drove the route and all of the families affected by the route closing are within 1.8 miles of the current bus stop now being used. "If they were two miles or further we would have to go around and pick them up," said Smith. He further related that there are other areas in the county where the children have to walk to the bus stop, it is not unusual.

"If they would have to make the loop to pick up the kids, it would have required more time on the bus for everyone involved," said Smith "And we just can't be expanding the route."

He thanked Tom Cooper Director of the Office of Emergency Management for his work with Homeland Security and the state in helping to get the route back open. Smith said he understands the parents' concerns, but the route closer was not the fault of the county.

"We didn't cause the slip," said Smith. "We have stayed in contact with the state in trying to get the slip repaired and still remained in compliance with the law on our bus route."

Under presentations: County principals presented student enrollment statistics to the board. A.I. Boreman Elementary School Principal Trisha Feldmeier said, "We have 345 students this year compared to 353 last year." She said there is no change in handbooks from last year.
