Tyler Star News

The West Virginia girls basketball season has passed the mid-way point now with teams looking ahead to possible match-ups in post season play. Both the Lady Wildcats of Paden City and the Lady Knights of Tyler Consolidated have had some tough contests of late, but continue to show improvement as the season continues.

Lady Wildcats

On Jan. 21, the Lady Wildcats traveled to Williamstown to face off with Wood County Christian, but returned home with the 59-53 loss in a close contest.

Off to a good start, the Lady Wildcats had the game well in hand until the second period, when the Wood County team stepped up defensively, holding the Green and White to only four points and taking over the lead heading into the half, 18-15.

Junior Myah Charkawi led the Green and White with 17 points, 10 rebounds, six steals, and one assist.

Logan Cosper chipped in 10 points for the 'Cats, had four rebounds, one steal, and two assists; Taylor Cosper, five points, four rebounds, seven steals and four assists; Cydney Blatt, five points, 16 rebounds, two steals; Kayla Hizer, two points, one rebound; Hannah Stanley, two rebounds, one steal.

Kayla Barker was credited with one steal; Kelsey Loy, two rebounds, one block; and Lynah Stanley, one rebound.

At Bishop Donahue on Jan. 22 the Lady Wildcats met defeat at the hands of the Lady Bishops of Bishop Donahue, 49-22.

The 'Cats fell behind 13-3 in the first, and were only able to add two more points in the second in the loss to the Bishops. Though they had a good third quarter and stepped up their level of play, it was too-little-too-late for the 'Cats to pull out the win. The loss put the teams' win/loss record at 8-10 on the season.

Charkawi was again the lead scorer for the Green and White, putting 14 points on the scoreboard. She also had 10 rebounds, blocked two shots, and stole the ball twice.

Freshman Taylor Cosper added three points to the mix for the Ladies in Green, pulled down two rebounds and hand three steals; Loy contributed two points, five rebounds, blocked four shots and had three steals; Logan Cosper, two points, three rebounds, one steal, and one assist.

Lynah Stanley scored one point and brought down three rebounds; Blatt had nine rebounds, one block, three steals and one assist; Darien Ritchie, one rebound; Hannah Stanley, one rebound; Kayla Hizer, one rebounds, two blocks and one steal; and Barker had one rebound, one steal.

The Lady 'Cats expect to see action again in the Hometown Invitational Tournament as well as OVAC play in the next two weeks.

Lady Knights

With every expectation of doing well in the upcoming post-season, the Lady Knights are poised to peak at their strongest in the next few weeks.

The team played host to the Lady Rebels of Ritchie County on Jan. 22, edging out the Blue for the win in the last few minutes of the game, 57-51.

On Monday the Silver faced another tough opponent in Williamstown, falling to the Lady Yellow Jackets 79-65.

On Jan. 31 the Lady Knights will travel to Pleasants County for a game with the Lady Blue Devils and to Ritchie County on Feb. 1.

The team will play for LKC placement next week.

Girls basketball Sectionals are scheduled to begin the week of Feb. 15. Section one teams in the hunt for a berth at Regionals are Bishop Donahue, Cameron, Hundred, Madonna, Magnolia, and Wheeling Central. Section two teams are: Clay Battelle, St. Marys, Paden City, Trinity, Tyler Consolidated and Valley.

Regionals are scheduled to begin Feb. 28.
