Boggs Roundball Classic action

Tyler Consolidated High School was the place to be last week as the varsity basketball team hosted the Boggs Family Pizza and Grill Roundball Classic Basketball Tournament. The tournament featured both girls and boys games and drew a large crowd for all games. Teams participating in the tournament were: Tyler Consolidated (boys and girls), Magnolia (boys and girls), Bellaire St. John Central (boys), Clay-Battelle (boys), Wirt County (girls), and Frontier (girls).

Silver Knights

The Silver Knight boys faced some tough competition at the tournament, taking third place overall when the dust settled on the court on Saturday.

The first contest on Friday featured a nice competition between Clay-Battelle and Bellaire St. John Central, with the Cee-Bees coming out on top with the win to send them to the championship game on Saturday.

In front of a large home and visiting crowd, the second game of the night featuring Tyler Consolidated and Magnolia promised to keep fans on the edge of their seats, and it did just that.

The game started off as a battle of wills with both teams stepping up their defense in order to keep the scoring down. By half-time though, tempers had flared, technical fouls were called and heated exchanges on the court almost took precedence over game play, finding the home team down by 27, with the score Magnolia 50, Tyler Consolidated, 23.

A quick third period of play saw the Knights answering their visitors shot for shot, but denying them few. When the buzzer sounded to end the game, the Blue Eagles were headed to the championship game, 91-62.

Junior Dylan Romine led all Knight scorers in the game with 21. He also brought down seven rebounds and was credited with four assists and four steals. Darren Heintzman added 14 points, pulled down four boards, had one steal and blocked a shot; Scott Sole had 11 points, three rebounds, two assists, two steals, and blocked a shot; Dylan Reynolds, five points, two rebounds, five assists; Drew Casey, four points, five rebounds; Tim Edwards, four points, two rebounds; Cole Kocher, two points, one rebound, three assists, two steals; and Randall Eastham had one point, five rebounds, one steal, and a block.

On Saturday evening, the Silver Knights took on Bellaire St. John’s in the consolation game, holding the Irish to single digits in every period while scoring at will and taking the win for third place overall in the tournament, 77-31.

Romine again led all home team scorers with 20 points. He also had seven rebounds and five steals; Heintzman put 19 points on the scoreboard for the Silver, hauled in seven boards and was credited with one assist and two steals; Sole added 17 points, had two rebounds, two assists and two steals; Edwards, six points, six rebounds; Kocher, five points, one rebound, three assists, three steals; Eastham, four points, three rebounds, one assist; Casey, three points, six rebounds; Blake Carpenter, three pints, one assist; Reynolds, two rebounds, six assists and one steal; and Swen Scheidemantel, one rebound and two assists.

In the championship, it was the Cee-Bee’s of Clay-Battelle taking the first place tournament trophy over the Blue Eagles of Magnolia to the tune of 60-42.

“We’d like to thank all the teams for participating in the tournament, this year,” said head coach of the Knights, J.C. Kimble. “We’d also like to thank Boggs Pizza for sponsoring the tournament again this year, and all the volunteer helpers who went out of their way to help. We certainly appreciate all the support. We couldn’t host this thing without them.”

The Silver Knights will play again on Jan. 18 when they host the Williamstown Yellow Jackets, and on Jan. 24 when the Ritchie County Rebels visit Tyler County.

Lady Knights

In the girls portion of the Boggs Family Pizza and Grill Roundball Tournament at Tyler Consolidated on Jan. 10, the Lady Cougars of Frontier saw victory in the first game of the tournament with a win over the Wirt County Lady Tigers. In the second game, the Lady Knights of Tyler Consolidated faced off with a long time rival, the Lady Blue Eagles of Magnolia.

The Silver got off to a quick and successful start, outscoring their opponents 16-9 after the first. In the second period, Magnolia connected more than the home team, outscoring them 11-6, to put them still trailing at the half, 22-20.

An uplifting third quarter saw the Silver and Black lengthen their lead and eventually take the win, 59-50, to qualify for the championship game.

Three players scored in double figures to lead the Knights to the win. Junior Sophie Kinnard double/doubled in the game with 20 points and 13 rebounds; junior Sydney Reed totaled 16 points and brought down 14 rebounds; and senior Allison Wable scored 12 points and had eight rebounds. Kinnard was also credited with a blocked shot, two steals and one assist; Reed had two steals and three assists; and Wable stole the ball three times, blocked a shot and had two assists.

Senior Torrye Cline scored nine points, had two rebounds, two steals and five assists; Megan Carpenter scored two points, had six rebounds, blocked a shot, had two steals and one assist; Hillary Casteel brought down one rebound; and Ariel Fish had three rebounds.

In the championship game on Jan. 12 the Lady Knights posted up against an aggressive Frontier team in an intense game which saw the home team wind up with their sixth loss of the season 48-43.

The two teams played to a 6-5 end of the first period and by half-time the Silver found themselves behind by a slight margin, 20-17. In the third period, both teams added 11 points apiece to the scoreboard to keep the game tight, but in the fourth, three-point accuracy by the Lady Cougars gave them the win.

Cline and Kinnard each totaled 12 points in the game with Kinnard pulling down 10 rebounds and Cline, two.

Kinnard also blocked two shots, had two steals and two assists, while Cline blocked one, stole the ball twice and had one assist.

The Lady Knights saw success for the fifth time this season as they traveled to Doddridge County on Jan. 7 to take on the Lady Bulldogs and pocket the win, 53-41.

The Silver and Black got off to a fine start, outscoring their hosts 18-6 in the first period of play. In the second, the Bulldogs stepped up their defense and stalled the Knights to hold them to only 11 points. At the half, Consolidated held their lead by 11, 29-18. In the second half it was a pretty even match-up between the two, but the Knights were able to hold off their hosts and eventually take the win.

Three Lady Knights double/doubled in the game with Kinnard scoring 18 points and bringing down 13 rebounds, senior Wable, contributed 15 points and had 10 rebounds, and Reed scored 10 points and hauled in 10 rebounds.

Kinnard was also credited with one block, three steals and five assists, while Wable had two steals and Reed blocked a shot, had two steals and two assists.

Senior Torrye Cline added eight points to the mix, had five boards, three steals and three assists; Carpenter scored two points, had six rebounds; and Casteel brought down a rebound, had two steals in the game and five assists.

Wable scored seven, had six rebounds and one assist; Reed contributed six points, had 11 rebounds, eight steals and three assists; Carpenter, four points, four rebounds, one blocked shot, one steal and one assist; Fish, two points, one rebound; and Casteel had three rebounds and blocked a shot.

The Tyler Consolidated ladies hosted the Lady Wildcats of Paden City on Monday and will see action at home against Parkersburg Catholic on Wednesday and travel to Ravenswood on Saturday.
