The Lady Wildcat volleyball team of Paden City High School found themselves just a few points away from taking the class A OVAC volleyball title on Saturday in Steubenville. Instead, the team reined in the runner-up prize, which in itself was no small chore.
The 'Cats, seeded number two in the OVAC conference, saw action in the semi-finals against the Lady Irish of St. John Central right off the bat, coming from behind to get the eventual win. Paden City fell in the first set, 23-25, but bounced back with determination to take the next two, 25-14 and 25-19.
Logan Cosper led all Wildcat scorers at the serving line, totaling 19 points. She had two digs, one kill, 100 sets and 44 assists; Taylor Cosper totaled 14 points, had one ace and seven digs; Myah Charkawi chipped in 13 points, had one ace, 17 digs and two kills; Lynnsie Parsons scored 13 points, had nine digs and 17 kills; Josie Fox, seven points, five digs; Haley Hizer, six points, one block, eight digs, eight kills; Megan Pierce, one block and 11 kills; Cydney Blatt was credited with eight kills.
In the championship game, the Lady 'Cats faced off with Madonna, battling point for point for the win. The Lady Dons took the first set 25-21, only to be edged out by Paden City in the second, 25-23. Though they put forth a valiant effort, the Green and White fell in the third, 25-17, to take the runner-up slot at the tournament.
Charkawi led the point getters for the 'Cats with 13 and two aces. She also had 13 digs and three kills. Taylor Cosper scored 12 points, had one ace, and nine digs; Logan Cosper, 12 points, one ace, six digs, 101 sets, and 35 assists; Fox, 11 points, one ace, four digs and one kill; Parsons, eight points, six digs, 13 kills; Hizer, three points, one ace, four digs, three kills; Pierce had two blocks and nine kills; and Blatt had one block and six kills.
The Lady Wildcats played host to Tyler Consolidated and John Marshall on Tuesday and will welcome Wood County Christian to Bob Burton gymnasium on Oct. 18.
