Today is West Virginia Day!
What does it mean to be a West Virginian? We are a rural population. We are a friendly and helpful people. We are realists. We are largely descended from North Britain - Lowland Scots, Ulster Scots, and Englishmen from the northern shires. We are the only state in the Union which lies completely within the Appalachian region.
While outsiders may view us as backwoods 'hicks' and our government may consider us an underdeveloped state, we West Virginians view ourselves with a sense of justifiable pride in our Mountain State heritage, which has produced artists, craftsmen, writers, and musicians as well as doctors, lawyers, educators, innovators and statesmen.
West Virginia is unique. We value our traditions. We maintain strong family ties. We are a hospitable people. We love our Mountain State. We respect individualism, independence, and self-reliance. We are gifted with a sense of humor, and a sense of solidarity as one culture. We are grounded in a strong religious foundation. We are patriots who serve our country with pride and honor.
Today we are pleased to honor our proud traditions, to celebrate and to claim this beautiful, one-of a kind place, this "wild and wonderful", almost Heaven, West Virginia, as our cherished heritage and our home.
