The brave never die

By Staff | May 23, 2012

May is a busy time around the Tyler Star News office, as proms, graduation ceremonies, sporting events, and Alumni festivities keep our cameras flashing and our fingers stiff from typing. By the last week in the month, we are exhausted and in need of a break in the action. But, while we look forward to the upcoming four-day weekend, we are reminded to observe the holiday as it should be: as a time to pause to honor the sacrifices of the brave men and women who valiantly gave their lives in the service of our great nation.

Far too often the “memorial” in Memorial Day is ignored by those of us who are the beneficiaries of the service men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of freedom. While this weekend will, without a doubt, be filled with picnics, reunions, and rest – we must take time to observe this solemnness of the holiday.

We encourage you to buy some flowers and visit a nearby cemetery. Walk among the headstones, and when you find a grave that has no flowers on it, leave one and say a prayer for the family of that fallen hero, who for some reason could not bring their soldier flowers.

Pray for our country and all who serve or have served; and for their families, who also serve by losing precious days, weeks and months spent with their loved ones who are off serving, preserving peace and the freedom we have in this country. Pray for the families who paid the ultimate price, who’s loved ones died, or were taken captive and never returned. Pray for anyone who may still be held in captivity and thinks perhaps they have been forgotten.

For “the brave die never, though they sleep in dust. Their courage nerves a thousand living men.”
